Responses to Reforms a Cause of Revolt of 1857

Responses to reforms: During the governor-generalship of Lord Bentick (1828-1835) several social and educational reforms were introduced in India by the British.

The British believed that Indian society had to be reformed. The British openly criticised some Hindu customs. Laws were passed to stop the practice of sati where widows were burnt alive on the funeral pyre of their husband and to encourage the remarriage of widow was sanctioned. Schools were opened for the education of women. English-language education was actively promoted.

Many Indians thought that the British were interfering needlessly in their age-old customs. Even the introduction of English-medium education, especially by Christian missionaries, was seen as a ploy to convert Hindus and Muslims to Christianity. Muslim leaders in Bengal started the Wahabi Movement to protest against the rapid loss of power and wealth suffered by Muslims in India. Persian was removed as the official language of Bengal, and replaced with English.

The Wahabi Movement become popular among the sepoys. This anger grew after the British government passed a law which made it possible for children to inherit their father’s property even if they changed their faith.

After 1830, the company allowed Christian missionaries to function freely in its domain and even own land and property. In 1850, a new law was passed to make conversion to Christianity easier.
